Canada - Eastview MiddleSchool's project with the use of ICT

Eastview Middle School aims to deepen mutual understanding between students inside and outside of Canada, and to inspire the spirit of globalization through ICT project.

Five teachers in charge of one hundred and twenty 12th grade students mainly implement classes with the use of ICT in Eastview Middle School. They plan for the curriculum of ICT class, proceed with it and exchange their experiences and opinion.

Examples of ongoing ICT project

AT&T Virtual Classroom Contest (1999)
Students in the 8th grade participated this project. Students in International School of General Education (St. Petersburg. Russia), Sekolah Tinggi Port Dickson (Malaysia) are also participating in this project. They are implementing collaborative project to build an ideal city online in class, and after the participating countries to symbolize cooperation, the city is named as Malcanru (MalaysiaCanadaRussia : http://www.att.virtualclassroom.org/vc99/vc_32/). Exchanges between students were very active.

Stock Market of Eastview (SMOE)
Grade 8 students are learning about buying and selling stocks in math and in social they are looking at how what is happening in the news affects the prices. They will choose a stock to follow from a news story and then predict what will happen to its value. In the meantime, they will be using an online database developed for this project to invest 100 000 Smoe Bucks. Students can look at their portfolios as well as those of their classmates. The EMates will be used to graph their results. This project is being run on the District Intranet. We hope to include other schools in the District this year and eventually open it up for everyone.

FINS (Fish in Schools)
Our eight grade 7 science classes have already begun a project in conjunction with Trout Unlimited the Fish and Wildlife Association. The students are raising fish eggs that will be released into the open water in the spring of 2000. This is a continuing project that we plan to expand with the help of the Environmental Outdoor Education classes. One of our goals is to develop a web site for all of the schools in North America currently involved in the project. We would host the website on our local provider, link to all schools involved and then have a discussion area for students to compare what is happening, conditions of the aquariums, health of the eggs/fish and other concerns that may arise. We would also like to find an expert who would be willing to answer student questions and archive the answers on the site. This would allow for students who are not involved in the project to follow our progress and learn from the study as well. We plan to videotape the eggs and fish at various stages of development . These clips will be put on the website for other students to see and learn from. As well, we will make a video from the presentation of the eggs to the release of the fish.

AsiaQuest (http://www.classroomconnect.com/)

About 24 of our grade 6 students are testing the Classroom Connect Project called AsiaQuest. The students log on to the site from school or home to follow the researchers as they travel the Silk Road. Their Quest is to find out if Marco Polo did indeed travel to China. Along the way the cyclists/researchers report on the people they meet, what they see, problems they encounter, the history, their experiences with culture shock and interesting science stories as well as many other interesting facts. The students can respond to surveys and provide suggestions throughout the five weeks of the project. The objective of this class is to provide students with preliminary information of China before they learn Chinese history in class. They are encouraged to share what they learn through this project with other students.

Social - Peer Collaboration (http://www.rdpsd.ab.ca/ev/ict/ictproject.html)
Students exchanges e-mails with other students in Canada and discuss multiculturalism and related issues with their peers across Canada. Through this project, they gain a new perspective on how these issues compare across their country.

Students will be able to discuss current and relevant issues to find out how their peers across Canada see the issues and how it affects them in their community. This will help all students to see what is important in other provinces and territories so that they have a more global perspective on decisions and events across the country.

School Web Page (http://www.rdpsd.ab.ca/ev/)
Eastview Middle School's teachers plan to have students develop a school web page to showcase our best work. Links to this will include the CyberFair Contest, AT&T Virtual Classroom Contest and the Communities Atlas Project. The school homepage will include the examples of research projects done on HyperStudio and ClarisWorks.
