SAIL Project in Australia

The SAIL Project provides teachers with links to people in industry who can bring first-hand stories into classrooms about the IT industry, IT careers and IT-skills being used in the industry. Using communications technologies, industry people can visit your classroom, be online consultants in student projects, answer questions and provide ideas. They can also 'talk' with teachers about how to interpret curriculum and meet the needs of the IT industry.

To teach most up to date ICT knowledge and information to students, Australian teachers implement SAIL (Student and Industry Link) project. Hosted by Faculty of Informatics and Communication in Central Queensland University, and RITE group in Queensland University of Technology in Australia, SAIL project was designed to deliver the latest ICT skills and job information to learners by those engaged in ICT industry. With the use of ICT infrastructure in schools, industry workers talk with students in class, provide online consulting for various projects that students are managing, and take a role of teachers by providing answers and ideas to students¡¯ questions. In addition, regarding ICT related curriculums, industry workers advise to teachers of how consistent the objectives and assignments of the curriculum are with practical ICT knowledge and information in the field.

Students participating SAIL project induce the idea and solution with the use of communication technology, web publishing and graphic programs. At first the skipper of this project provide advice on how to find proper industry-mate to teachers. Also, the crews on the SAIL-t list are responsible for drawing helpful ideas for teachers¡¯ project implementation and coordinating industry-mate and teachers for better performance.

Followings are subjects SAIL project supports:
- Computer learning
- Data processing
- ICT vocational training program
- Technology instruction

Age Level : 15-18 years

Six steps of SAIL project management
a. At first, teachers who would like to participate in project search for the ideas regarding what kind of activities will they want to manage with Industry Mate within the range of equivalent subjects and curriculums.
b. The teachers who could not find appropriate industry mate would ask for advice on what kind of industry mate they should select from "Navigation-deck" and for tips on how they should keep the relationship with Industry mate for smooth progress of the project.
c. Register for the list of The Crew by e-mailing. Teachers can get help and close observation on how other teachers manage their projects.
d. Describe the qualification of Industry Mate and advertise it through Sail-t list or other lists on this site. At this time, Project Skipper needs to explain the process for the selection of Industry Mate.
e. Teachers in the Sail-t list can consult each other. For sharing ideas, teachers inform reports or tips, and upload useful resources on "Resources Stow".
f. Publish Web-articles regarding SAILing adventure including in-class experience through "Captain's Log". Such activities are manageable through school homepages. Also other schools' activities can be informed through "Captain's Log".

The SAIL project is an ongoing project. You can join at any time.
