After selected as members of Korea National University of Education
APEC YIV (Youth Internet Volunteer) to Indonesia in the end of June,
we had prepared training classes. But I did not have the feeling
of participation until we met the president of KNUE and attended
the Opening Ceremony for starting this activity in Korea Human Resource
and Education Department.
YIV activity has been started on August 5, 2001. After 7 hours'
flight, we arrived at the foreign country which has tropical trees
and different traffic system. It has two hours' difference in time
from Korea. But the time difference did not cause any problem. At
the first glance, the nation, Indonesia has the unique contrast
of wealth and poverty which could be felt from luxury buildings
and humble houses with iron plate.
We had very busy days from the next day. We went to SMK 6, a commercial
high school which is located at a suburb of Jakarta. Most of the
students of the school were girls. Six girl students helped us to
train 40 teachers of different 20 schools in Jakarta.
The third day was the worst day for us. We expected there should
have been computers at least. However, new computers were not delivered
yet. There was no choice but moving around in confusion. We were
very worried about the class. Fortunately we were released from
this anxiety only after arrival of computers.
Through the night's conference, we confirmed the parts that each
student's assigned subject and the ways that would be used. We planed
to manage two divisions; one for morning, and the other for afternoon.
At the night, the students who would have the classes next day were
doing the rehearsals with using English. After that, they went to
bed with anxiety.
In
the morning of the fourth day, we talked about the day's classes,
gathering at the hotel's restaurant. But most of us suffered from
the same stomachache. The classes were about Internet. We had planed
to teach how to use OS for the beginning of the term. But, we thought
it would be too boring for them to start with. Although, most of
us are will have the teacher internship in the next semester, it
was not easy to be a teacher for others. Fortunately the teachers
enjoyed the classes.
Even though we had little problem at the beginning, the week was
not so hard. From the time for rising, to the time for the end of
the classes, we, 11 members were urged to be on time. But the classes
from Tuesday were those that we wanted. But the most important factor
for us was their smile. If there had not been their smile, we should
have regretted being in Jakarta through two weeks.
Actually, we had planed to complete design the school home pages
at 10th day, but with some problem, we tried it again next day.
Many teachers were not so skillful at making their web pages. But
we could find some good designed pages among them. Then only the
ceremony for completion was remained after the day's souvenir photograph.
When professor Song delivered the certificates of completion to
the teachers, there was only one thing that we could thought: maybe,
we could have been better. After the closing ceremony, we could
have time to go to the beach around the city. The climate was so
similar to that of Korea's Autumn. And we spent the last night in
Indonesia with talking about the things that we had done.
At the beginning of the activity, we didn't have exact information
about it. We have heard that professor Song also did not have detailed
information on it. And the other problems are food and language.
I thought that we could be better, if there are any chance to do
it again.
We could see a vigorous flame and a thick smoke in the distance.
That would be Indonesia's present; it cannot afford to deal with
the problems of environment yet, but like that frame, tries to develop...
This is the Indonesia that I felt during this term. But still, there
would be many problems that they should solve such as gab of wealth
and poverty..
I want to finish this story in Indonesia with appreciating to all,
especially to the professor Song and two graduate students. Good
bye Indonesia.
