The Great Awakening in Philippines
¡°Hello, mom. are you from Korea? Do you know Santara Park?¡±
When I visited Jaro1 Elementary School in Iloilo city, that question was the first mission I should give the proper answer to the hundreds of the little friends who surrounded me. Actually, I was kind of embarrassed to answer the question because I never expected those questions from the students and I had no idea about ¡°Santara Park¡± before. (Santara Park is a Korean teenager who became the most popular singer in Philippines nowadays.) Anyway, it was a good sign for us to start our volunteer work in there because most students were already so curious about Korea and welcomed our visiting all the time.

During 10 days, we visited three schools from an elementary school to a university in Ilioilo city and the Jaro1 Elementary School was the first place we started to do our volunteer work. Our main goal of this AIV work in Philippines was to share the vision for the future education through accomplishing ¡°Digital Divide¡± with multimedia training program and the other goal was to improve the cultural understanding between Korea and Philippines by experiencing each other¡¯s cultural activities.

Actually, the computer system in Jara1 Elementary School was not good, and it was almost impossible to do our ICT training program for the teachers and the students in there with that system. Nevertheless, we were not surprised at all because we already knew that that¡¯s the reason we should be there. We checked the system and set the new computer system for the multimedia training program we prepared and on the other hand, we prepared to perform Korean culture activities with a lot of materials for the students. Every member of our team exactly knew each one¡¯s work and we just executed our own job perfectly without wasting our precious time. It was definitely thanks to each member¡¯s diligent preparation by plenty of planning and meeting for this work.

Under the hot and humid weather, wearing Korean ¡°Hanbok¡±, we started our training program with more than 1,200 people of the students and teachers in Jaro1 Elementary School from 9 am to 5 pm all day long. Honestly, it was not that easy. Sometimes it was backbreaking time for us, however, the powerful thing hold us together to the end was ¡° The Passion for the Sharing Together¡± and ¡°The Love for the People in Philippines¡±

Teachers and students who toughed the various multimedia program we taught were very interested in learning the new ICT and they were also very excited to learn Korean culture and history. We were so happy to answer thousands of their questions about ICT training program and culture and many kinds of other things.

The next school we visited was Sta. Barbara National Comprehensive High School. It was quite different from the elementary school because the size of the school was much bigger than the before one and what the students and the teachers wanted to know was different. It was the same situation in the West Visayas State University, which was the last school we visited. While we were moving to the higher education school, we had to prepare materials in different ways for the perfect program in each school.

I felt like what we did in every place we went was absolutely ¡°A Wonderful Creation from Nothing.¡± Whenever we visited each school and performed our volunteer work, we became new creators for the wonderful job for the people in there. Every situation was different but we never complained and blamed the environment but we started to do our work with new idea and concentrated on what we planed instead of hesitation. It was such a great teamwork. I could feel our members¡¯ love which made me warm whenever I had a hard time.

Every morning before starting my new volunteer work, I remember I felt nervous and thrilled and especially I was full of expectation to meet the people who really welcomed us and who were eager to learn what we prepared, waiting for us for a long time. For the 10 days, our team had a very precious time with the people who got together in the Philippines, and actually, I had a great awakening time with our team members because our team itself gave me a deep impression. Every one was so giving and they were caring other members all the way we had traveled. I want to say ¡°Thank you¡± for all our team members, specialy for Prof. Jun who was such a great team leader I¡¯ve ever seen before.

I know that just teaching brilliant computer program was not what we wanted. Sharing and living together must be the main goal of our job. I am sure that we did our best and we tried to touch the people by heart to heart sharing our property and culture. I never forget this experience in the future and I really appreciate for being chosen as a Alcob member and being able to do the AIV work in Philippines. Thank you.
