Starting off from Scratch

It all started when I was offered to teach computer classes to Junior and Senior students taking Computer as their elective. With the initial of three computers and a dot-matrix printer for 40+ students and a class of four sessions daily, I have to ensure proper scheduling so that everyone will be given equal access to computers. It was never a bed of roses for me and my students, the important thing is, we have started.

More than the shortage in physical facilities was the curriculum-the school don¡¯t have the prescribed curriculum for computer classes so it was my initiative to research on the approval of the school management, we extended our resources we have for such classes. With the approval of the school management, we extended our resources to parents encouraging them to pay very minimal amount for the maintenance of the available machines. I the Philippines, it a common knowledge to all teachers, parents and students that no fees will be collected except for those authorized ones and unluckily payment for computer classes is not authorized. It was the Parent Teachers Association of our school who authorized the collection of such fee from the parents of the students enrolled in computer class.

From the monthly payments of parents, we were able to procure units-almost every end of the school year. From three units we increased to eleven units, two dot matrix printers and ink jet printers, a flat bed scanner, a television set, four airconditioners, computer tables and other peripherals. With the help of my students we have networked all computers for easy access and sharing of resources and printers. The Department of Trade and Industry under its program PC for Public School had donated twenty more units of computer. With additional computer units, students were given enough chance to work on the computer.

The computer lab had also been an avenue for the Intel Teach to the Future Training Program- a program which train teachers on the use of computer technology as a tool of in the delivery of their lessons. The computer laboratory had served not only the students but also the teachers of the school and the neighboring community.

Despite of the so many limitations of the computer laboratory, students were taught on computer operations to the maximum-an opportunity which made our students abreast with the ¡°computerized world¡± so they say. We started from the very basic of it because majority of my students have no background at all and only few have PCs at home. It was quite difficult in the beginning because I still have to start with the basic on mouse and keyboard manipulation. However, with my gentle persistence and unbounded patience, I was able to impart to my students all the basic skills required for them to correctly manipulate the computer.

For four long years we had sustained the inadequacy and now we are enjoying the not so many numbers of units but at least quite enough for our class size. This year the PTA purchased one unit of multimedia projector to use in the computer laboratory.

This year we¡¯re fortunate enough to be able to the recipient of the Ayala Youth Tech Program and the Globelines were we are granted one year free access to the internet including its installations and other peripherals and a server. The computer laboratory was utilized to the maximum because it is not only computer students using it; other students are also frequently visiting the laboratory for their research on the web.

And we had a marvelous opportunity to have workshop for teachers and students this year. The host of the workshop was Korean ALCoB(APEC Learning Community Builder) supported by IACE(Institute of APEC Cyber Education). Six volunteers visited us and introduced to us HT Video Editor. They brought us high-tech computer system and auxiliary equipment. Using them, we learned how to produce educational materials for teaching and learning. The teachers who took part in the workshop told us that it was very precious time to understand how to produce educational materials based ICT. The workshop was not only for teachers. Students also attended the workshop to learn to make educational materials for them. They understand the contents very well.

This workshop was held for two days, and it was very good for us. But there are more students and teachers who could not join the classes. We are going to make a training plan for them to be able to create their ICT educational materials. This workshop gave us a chance to open a new possibility making educational video data. We are grateful for all staffs who prepare this nice program.
