Hi, my name is Ma. Carmela C. Capitpit, a Computer Education teacher of Jaro 1 Elementary School, located Cuartero Street, Jaro, Iloilo City, Philippines. The school happens to be the central school in the District of Jaro.
It is composed of 56 teachers and 1,620 pupils. There are 53 academic classrooms, 1 Science Centrum, 1 Computer Room. Our computer room has 14 sets of computer, 5 dot-matrix printer, 5 disk drives, not air conditioner unit in it. The computers of Jaro 1 elementary school have no Internet, no Local Area Network Room, Home Economics Room, Teachers Room and Physical Education Room.

There are about 400 pupils enrolled in Computer Education out of 1,620 enrollees this school year 2004. Each grade and section has its own schedule from 40 minutes to one hour once in a week session. The lesson is divided into two parts: the discussion and hands-on activity, alternately.

My first year of teaching Computer Education is very difficult in my part since I need to be more patience and understanding on the pupil¡¯s side. It is also the first hand experience in the part of the pupils. They have no knowledge about computer except those few who have computers at home. The pupils can hardly understand the terms used in the lesson so I have to explain it in English and translated into vernacular (native) language. Teaching pupils to use touch computer is the most difficult part, but it¡¯s is so fun! The pupils are afraid to touch computer hardware because they thought ¡®it might explode¡¯. They are innocent pupils but then they¡¯re eager to learn.

As time passed by, my pupils learned more. They develop their visual-spatial intelligences. They are very creative, independent and very cooperative to one another. They learned about WordPad, Paint program (drawing), Microsoft Word (in typing documents) and part of Microsoft Excel program. As of this moment, they use computer as a tool in making projects, research, and to make some investigation as part of performance output in a subject.

It is the greatest accomplishments I ever had. It leads pupils to be more independent and competitive enough to the needs of time. More so, they have learned how to face in challenge brought by the modern world and to have greater opportunity in life.

Just recently, a train was conducted in Jaro 1 Elementary School for all the teachers and pupils as well, this was sponsored by the Korean Government headed by Prof. Youngcook Jun, Ph.D., and his team members (Chaegu Park, Gyuhyeong Yeon, Kikyeong Kim, Jihee Ko, Jieun Lee). It was a very good and successful training. They teaches us about HT Video Editor, how to use it? Well, we have video shooting, digitizing, picture taking. Then we copy those pictures in the computer using HT Video Editor. Then we make movie clip, edit it, and save copy on the CD for production.

In the days to come, I will train/teach my co-teacher about the HT Video Editor program for them to use in their classroom and subject activities. As for my pupils, well I already train/ teach a lot of them. I am looking forward to see my pupils using HT Video Editor in whatever endeavor of lives they may be, hoping that I can also share my knowledge to other people not only in school but in the community.

Me, my co-teachers and my pupils learned a lot and it adds to our knowledge and experience about computer.
Well, before I end, I would like to share to your one of the best quotation.
¡®The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand till then.¡¯
