I have been teaching English for 14 years.

As I teach English, I always want to find better ways of teaching that will improve my students¡¯ level of speaking and writing the English language. As you can imagine, learning a second language without that language¡¯s cultural background and mood is not easy. Besides students hardly could get chances to write and speak English. One must teach English with the concept that a language is not fixed. It is a living tool that we create. There are so many methods of teaching English to prepare students for English exams and for speaking and writing the language. There is, however, a definite limitation of our intellectual intelligence in understanding the true feeling of learning a second language.

I have discovered a number of very effective methods to improve my students¡¯ skills of speaking and writing English. It is to teach the intelligence of feeling or sensitivity.

A great benefit for a student learning English as a second language is for him or her to have the opportunity to study in an English speaking country and to be exposed to its people and culture. The problem however, is that not everyone can afford to travel abroad to study. The solution to this problem lies in highly developed industry of Information Technology. As technology has progressed, the effectiveness of the internet in terms of sharing information and of sharing people¡¯s cultural environment has been greatly increased. Anyone accessing the internet can freely share information about themselves through email, video and voice conversations, and web based on-line or off-line community activities. Although users of the internet may be in remote locations, they can still share their cultures and ideas in many ways through the internet. .

I think that students have a great opportunity to be exposed to other environments by the use of the internet. It allows the students to understand the English language with a higher level of intelligence and sensitivity. As they interact with others who have a totally different subjectivity, they can more easily understand the cultural diversity of the country and the true meaning of a language as a living tool that they can create.
In addition, I like travel very much. Learning by travel last long. Traveling foreign countries, I have felt short of information. The information which tour guiding books give us was not sufficient to me. I have been thinking long ago, if I had chances to share specific information of the place where I want to visit, it would be very useful.
I tried to find that kinds of web sites, but I couldn't.
I have known many foreign teachers on ALCoB web page. I mailed my idea to them many times. They told me that they felt same emotion like me. So, I'd like to decide to make a community.

Once we establish a community based on communication through the internet, they will lead their communities with great creativity. These communities will bring many opportunities for students to speak freely and not only what the text books want them to say. Off-line community activities such as travel, exchange student experiences, and conferences will enrich the information base of the communities. Naturally, the understanding of the cultural diversity and uniqueness of us all will be the core basis for their future learning. Furthermore, I expect that all of the activities that are held by the communities will make students relieve the digital division among member economies with APEC and to set up a human network of ALCoB.

|Expected Results

I can expect to improve students¡¯ English learning and to relieve the digital divide among member economies within APEC and setting up a human network of ALCoB. We can share good information of a place where we want to visit.

|Schedule

1. Recruiting teachers
I mailed my idea to foreign ALCoBs many times. I could get some teachers wanting to join my community. When I visited Beijing last December, I explained my idea to Chinese teachers. I could get a verbal promise from Chinese teachers.
2. Recruiting students wanting to join the project through ALCoB teachers
I asked foreign ALCoBs to select some students wanting to make e-pals. I have already placed my students' e-mail address on the community, My school, my town, and my country.
3. Making web page
4. Enlarging the community including all APEC.
