2001 ALCoB Internet Volunteers (AIV) Report!

Thailand 1

A. Profile

ACEN Youth Internet Volunteer (YIV) provides ICT-skill training for local schoolteachers and students in the APEC region. They work for local schools as well as local communities to build the ICT network among ACEN members. Planted by YIV activities in the developing countries, the seeds of ICT education help to increase computer literacy, internet-accessibility, and the use of ICT in education throughout APEC's developing region.

YIV's activities concentrate on following sub-fields:
- Train ICT skills to local schoolteachers, school administrators and students
- Set up homepages for local schools
- Collect data of on-going ACEN activities and locally produced multimedia materials
- Train local YIV
- Build an ACEN offline network among APEC economies

Through these activities, people in the developing region improve educational opportunities in the field of ICT use, which results in narrowing the extreme level of the digital divide between the "haves" and the "have-nots" in APEC economies. Also, lasting ACEN friendships between YIV and the host countries are built and the ACEN community spirit grows in dispatching areas. Therefore, YIV will contribute in building a background for mutual understanding and international cooperation in the era of Globalization and Informatization.

YIV team consists of university students and professors, with advanced ICT skills and multiple language proficiency. They are highly motivated to volunteer service. The first term of service begins Aug. 2001. The first batch of Korean YIV (40 qualified college students and 4 professors) is going to schools in Indonesia and Thailand.

Thailand 2

The APEC Cyber Education Network Project (ACEN) and APEC Youth Internet Volunteer Program (AYIV) are the pioneering projects which are created to narrow the gaps of resources, knowledge and expertise in education and to create cooperation among teachers, students and technicians in APEC countries via the Internet technology.
During 6-16 August 2001, the Youth Internet Volunteers (YIV) from the Republic of Korea, leading by Professor Dr. Inwoo Park and Professor Dr. Han Heungsik, have visited Thailand.

With the Cooperation among Korean YIVs, and Thai staffs from Rajabhat Institute Suan Duist (RISD), The Office of National Primary Education Commission (ONPEC), the Educational Management Information System Center (EMISC), and the Department of Vocational Education, the workshop for sharing the educational knowledge and experience in information and communication technology -document and Web page designing, document collecting and categorizing- was carried out.

Korean and Thai staffs were divided into three groups, having a workshop to create educational Websites as models for online learning modules.

In group one, the Korean and Thai religious structures Web site was made.

In group two, the learning module for teaching the information in the Internet was made.

In group three, the English learning module for English for Communication and Information Retrieval of Rajabhat Institute Suan Dusit (RISD) was reviewed and modified.

At the end of the workshop, all the projects achieved the set objectives.
